Starting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Many people, young and old, say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Follow along as we examine the things you need to know when starting to collect gemstones yourself.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to understand as much as you possibly can about your new hobby. The more you know about the hobby of gemstones the better off you'll be. You will know exactly what to look for.

To start with, an important aspect in gemstone evaluation is color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones become higher in value when they are equal in color to the spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, violet and blue. They drop in value the farther they deviate from the pure natural color.

The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits in evaluating gemstones. The stone has to be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A gemstone with the poor cut will be muted or washed out. Tone, color saturation, and color hue will always look inconsistent.

Another factor to consider is the clarity of the stone. This is talking about the gemstones purity with no internal conclusions, particles or spots inside the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.

Next comes weight and size. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. Be aware however, that weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized sapphire or ruby weighs out at 1.20 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Virginia you can find Amethyst, Garnet, Beryl and Moonstone. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or check out raw material in the peridot fields in Chudleigh Park, Queensland, Australia.

Dispersion is the splitting of white light into its spectral colours, as with light transmitted through a prism. It is also called fire when describing the dispersion seen in gemstones; diamond is a good example with a high dispersion value. Diamonds may be cut to increase dispersion at the sacrifice of brilliance or vice versa as described above in the brilliance description. The fire in opal is caused by the dispersion of light through its unique hydrous silica structure. The amount of dispersion in gemstones can be given in figures, but is generally described simply as low, medium and high.

The Patricia Emerald Crystal was discovered in the Columbian Andes' Chivor Mine
in 1920 and is named after the mine owner's daughter. Not only is it one of the
largest gem-quality emeralds in the world, but it is also dihexagonal, or 12-
sided, and measures 2" 1". The stone has flaws, but this is common in
emeralds -- the vast majority of faceted emerald gems have flaws. The stone
resides in the New York Museum of Natural History.
