The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits in evaluating gemstones. The stone has to be cut in a way that reflects light back to the viewer. A gemstone with the poor cut will be muted or washed out. Tone, color saturation, and color hue will always look inconsistent.
Another factor to consider is the clarity of the stone. This is talking about the gemstones purity with no internal conclusions, particles or spots inside the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws would make the gemstone highly valuable.
Next comes weight and size. Save for pearls and corals, all gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. Be aware however, that weight and size are not the same in gemstones. Density or specific gravity can vary in gemstones. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats, you will find a similar sized sapphire or ruby weighs out at 1.20 carats.
