Starting To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the science, art and profession of identifying and evaluating rocks known as natural diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of people taken up gemology as a hobby. They become interested in collecting and evaluating loose diamonds or loose gemstones. Some people even begin to visit various locations close by to look for rough gemstones. Some hobbyists will learn to cut or tumble the gemstones they find. If this hobby interest you follow along as we discuss the different aspects of this hobby.

The first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the proper way is through the power of knowledge. By visiting a local library you can find books on the subject that will let you make wise purchases from the beginning.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. These materials are so related to their color that they've even become associated with particular ones. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They are valued much less the farther they are from the pure spectral color.

Gemstone cut is an important aspect to consider when buying a gemstone. The stone has to be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A gemstone with an improper cut will be muted or washed out. Color tone, saturation, and hue will never look consistent.

Gemstone clarity is the next item to consider. Clarity refers to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. Generally speaking, a clearer stone is more valuable. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye you need a gemstone loupe (gemstone clarity magnifier) or gem microscope. Serious hobbyists will use an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

Gemstones are often listed according to their size aspect since it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may have the same size but have different carat weights that result in different pricing structures. This factor comes from the difference regarding relative density or specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and characteristic crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable a brilliant ruby of the same proportions in size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Although gems are frequently used in jewelry, they are perfectly good collectibles in their own right. In fact, there are many attractive and interesting gemstones that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Take each gemstone and consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And unlike many hobbies where you have to buy everthing you can actually go hunting for raw gemstones in the field. In the US in Hawaii you can find Peridot and Coral. And in Canada you can hunt for nephrite jade in Cry Lake, British Columbia or blue spinel from Daillebout, Quebec along with amethyst from Nova Scotia. Think of gemstone collecting for the great hobby it is.

Many gemstones will undergo some kind of treatment between the time they are
mined and the time they reach you. These treatments are carried out in order to
improve the appearance of the stone (color or clarity). Treatments include
exposure to very high temperatures, irradiation, heat or irradiation combined
with another chemical (e.g. titanium), oiling, and waxing. Treated gemstones
are not considered less valuable as long as the treatment is considered
permanent by relevant gemological organizations. That means that the
treatment will not wear off with time. In some kinds of gemstones, treatments
are so common that it is nearly impossible to find an untreated one. Rubies are
an example of this. Other gemstones could not exist without treatments, e.g.
Mystic topaz.

Collecting Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Gemology is the art, profession and science of evaluating and identifying gemstones from loose gemstones to natural diamonds. Many people take up gemology more as a hobby. They become very interested in starting to collect loose diamonds or loose gemstones. A number of these hobbyists start to travel to different areas close by or even taking a trip to other countries to hunt for raw or rough gemstones. Some even tumble or learn to cut their own gemstones. If you have an interest in this hobby then follow along as this article discusses the things you should know to start this hobby.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to know everything there is to know about the subject of gemstones. The more you understand about gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. You need to be as informed as possible.

First on your list to consider is stone color. You want the stone that is as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. We are talking about violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. In general terms, the prices of very dark are very pale semiprecious and precious gemstones are lower.

Gemstone cut is very important and is used not only to appraise diamonds along with gemstones. A precision cut will highlight the natural color of the gemstone, diminish any inclusions, and exhibits good overall symmetry and proportion. One way of determining the excellence of gemstone cut is to consider if it is able to reflect light on a consistent level throughout its surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side much of the light will refract out of the gem rather than reflecting internally. Gem color appears washed out.

Our next consideration is the issue of gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone being considered. Normally large flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with others requiring a 10X magnification.

Gemstones are often listed according to size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference in specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.

Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there are so many different types when it comes to gemstones. You can start collecting gemstones like Feldspar (moonstone), Tanzanite and other varieties of zoisite or Onyx for example. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the United States. In Alabama you can find Beryl, blue and yellow; Smoky Quartz and Hematite.

The Hobby Of Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they are very beautiful items. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, their value increases over time. Many hobbyists love to collect and work with each and every one of the 150 varieties available. This article will discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

At the very beginning you need to learn all you can on the wide variety of stones available. This will help you to know what exactly you're looking for so you buy the right items. This will help you make informed decisions.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they have even lent their names to specific colors. Without a doubt you will recognize sapphire blue, ruby red, jade green, aquamarine, emerald green or turquoise. Gemstones become higher in value when they are equal in color to the spectral colors of violet, blue, green,, orange and red. They are valued much less the farther they are from the spectral color.

Stone cut is the second most important factor to consider before a purchase. The precision of cut will determine how much light is reflected by the gemstone. It will fully factor highly in the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

The clarity of a gemstone is our next factor. Gemstone clarity relates to the amount of inclusions (trace elements or large particles of other elements or minerals) that a gem has. A perfect gemstone is obviously worth more. To examine flaws not seen with the naked eye you need a gem microscope or 10X gemstone clarity magnifier. Many hobbyists will get an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

Next to consider are weight and size. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are priced by the carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. However you should know weight and size are not the same in gemstones. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. Take a diamond that is 1.00 carats in weight and you will find that a Sapphire or ruby of the same size would weigh 1.20 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can be very enjoyable and also rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting gemstones. Just in the United States in Virginia you can find Amethyst, Garnet, Beryl and Moonstone. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal at Lightning Ridge in NSW, Austalia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or check out the Moonstone regions in Moonstone Hill, Queensland, Australia.
