Why I Like Gemstones
Our Featured Gemstone ArticleStarting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting
By Lee MacRae
Many people today say collecting various
loose gemstones or
loose diamonds is a favorite pastime. They love the colors and the beauty of the various gemstones you can find just about everywhere in the world. Read long as we examine the things you need to know when starting this gemstone hobby.
Right at the beginning, what you need is to get some books from the library or bookstore. You want to learn as much as you possibly can about your new hobby. The more you learn about gemstones the wiser will be your purchases. You'll know exactly what to look for in a quality stone.
The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored naturally occurring materials you can find. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they have even lent their names to specific colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher when they are equal in color to the spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They become less valuable the more they deviate from the spectral color.
How a gemstone is cut is the second most important factor to consider. The precision of the cut is the factor which determines how much light the stone will reflect. The cut will ultimately determine the stones brilliance and how much it will be valued.
Our next consideration is the issue of gemstone clarity. The aspect of clarity refers to the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of a stone being considered. Larger flaws you can usually see with your naked eye with others needing to be magnified 10X
Gemstones are often categorized according to size because of being more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different prices as well. This is due to gemstone difference in specific gravity and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. For example, a one carat round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.
Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there is such a variety when it comes to gemstones. You can start collecting gemstones like Emerald, Sugilite Natural moissanite for example. The varieties are nearly endless. And if you like to save money but love vacations you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Take the example of the United States. In Minnesota you can hunt for Agate and Thomsonite.

The aquamarine is a member of the beryl family and ranges in color from a pale
almost colorless blue to blue-green to pure blue. Some of these stones are
heated to enhance their color and change a light colored stone to pure blue.
Usually faceted, aquamarines are also cut as cabochons and may then exhibit
asterism. Legend tells of sailors who wore aquamarines to keep them safe and to
prevent seasickness. The most valuable aquamarines come from Brazil.

The Reward of Faith Sapphire. This stone was was found in 1975 at the Reward
gemfield near Rubyvale in Queensland, Australia. In 1983 it was cut into the
52.36-carat round you see here, measuring 22.35 mm across and 13.49 mm deep. It
is still owned by its original owner. The stone's color in the photograph is
close to the true color but this does change considerably, to a deeper red,
depending on the nature of the light, although perhaps not strongly enough to be
called a color change sapphire.
