By Lee MacRae
Many people, young and old, say collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like
loose diamonds or
loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. They simply love the beauty and the colors Of the assorted number of gemstones found worldwide today. Follow along as we examine the things you need to know when starting this interesting gemstone hobby.
Right at the beginning, what you need is to get yourself some books on gemstones. You want to learn as much as you possibly can about precious and semiprecious gemstones. The more you learn about the hobby of gemstones the better off you'll be. You will know exactly what you are looking at.
First, color is a major part in evaluating a gemstone. The closer a color is to its purer spectral value the more highly prized it is. Traditionally, these specter colors include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Gemstones colors that are paler or darker tend to be less valued.
Gemstone cut is an important aspect to consider in determining gemstone value. The gemstone must be cut with precision to reflect the light properly. A poor cut will never be able to reflect light consistently. Color saturation, color hue and color tone will always appear inconsistent
Next to look at is the aspect of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of a stone. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the unaided eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.
Gemstones are often categorized according to their size criteria because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This factor comes from the difference in relative density or specific gravity depending upon the chemical composition and crystal structure type Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats instead.
Taking up the collecting of loose gemstones can be a great hobby. And there is such a variety in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can start collecting gemstones like Alexandrite and other varieties of chrysoberyl, Topaz or Natural moissanite for example. The choice and beauty and variety is almost endless. And if you like a hands on hobby you can go hunting for raw gemstones. Take the example of the US. In Idaho you'll find Garnet, Opal, Agate, Obsidian and Sapphire.
