Our Featured Gemstone ArticleThe Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting
By Lee MacRae
For many people collecting semi-precious and precious gemstones like
loose diamonds or
loose gemstones is a passionate hobby. Many people have a great love Of the assorted number of gemstones found around the world today. Read long as we examine the things you need to know when starting to collect gemstones yourself.
To start off right you'll need the knowledge on the wide variety of stones available. This knowledge will help you to know the properties of each stone so you buy the right items. Without the proper knowledge you can make costly mistakes.
First on your list to look at should be the color of the stone. You'll want the gemstone to be as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. The spectral colors are violet, orange, yellow, green, blue, and red. The prices for very pale or very dark precious and semi precious stones are lower in value.
Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones as well. A good cut highlights the natural color of the gemstone, diminish any inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One way of determining the excellence of the cut is to look at how well and consistent it reflects light over its entire surface. If the gemstone is cut to shallow most of the light will refract out rather than reflecting internally. The gem appears washed out.
Our next consideration is the clarity of the gemstone. The aspect of clarity refers to internal flaws (inclusions) or the external blemishes of the gemstone under consideration. Normally large flaws can be seen with the unaided eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.
Gemstones are often listed according to their size aspect because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This is due to the difference of specific gravity or relative density depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond of typical proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh approximately 1.55 carats.
Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting gemstones. Just in the United States in Alabama you can find Beryl, blue and yellow; Smoky Quartz and Hematite. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or check out the Moonstone regions in Moonstone Hill, Queensland, Australia.
