Starting To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why would someone go to the trouble of collect loose gemstones? Well to begin with gemstones are extremely beautiful. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can appreciate in value over time. Many in this hobby love to collect and show case the wide variety of gemstones available today. Follow along as we discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

Right at the beginning, what you need is to visit the library and get some books. You want to understand as much as you possibly can about the subject of gemstones. The more you know about gemstones the less likely you are to make a mistake. With adequate knowledge you are less likely to be fooled.

The first criteria you need to evaluate is stone color. Without a doubt, gemstones are the most intensely colored natural material available on earth. These materials are so related to their color that they've even had their names combined with associated colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones are valued much higher the closer they are to the colors in the spectrum of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They are valued much less the farther they deviate from the natural color.

Gemstone cut is very important and is used not only to appraise diamonds but you're gemstones as well. A precision cut gemstone highlights the natural color of the gemstone, diminish any inclusions, and show off its symmetry and proportions. One excellent way to determine the excellence regarding the cut of the gemstone is how consistently it reflects the light throughout the surface of the stone. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of this light were refracted away rather than reflecting inside the stone. Gemstone color will be washed out.

The clarity of a gemstone is the next item to consider. When we talk of clarity it relates to the absence of flaws or blemishes inside the stone. A perfect gemstone is obviously valued highly. To determine the flaws not seen with the unaided eye you need a gem microscope or gemstone clarity magnifier. Most hobbyists will use an inexpensive 10X gemstone or jewelers loup for viewing their coins, beads, stamps or in our case gemstones.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to their size since it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may have the same size but differ in carat weights and as a result different pricing structures. This is due to the difference regarding specific gravity or relative density and depends on the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. Normally a one carat brilliant round diamond with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A comparable round brilliant ruby of the same size and proportions will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and rewarding in the long run. You can take your time and not lay out a lot a cash at the start and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go looking for gemstones. Take the example of the US. In New Mexico you'll find Turquoise, Garnet, Peridot, Rock Crystal and Obsidian And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Killiecrankie, Tasmania or check out raw material in the peridot fields in Chudleigh Park, Queensland, Australia.
