Number one to look at Is gemstone color. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have colors that are close in pureness to the spectral colors of orange, green, yellow, Violet or blue. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or are too dark can lower the value quite easily.
How a gemstone is cut is the second most important value determination to look at before a purchase. The preciseness of the cut determines the amount of light the gemstone stone will reflect. It will fully determine the brilliance of the stone and how much someone will pay for it.
Next to look at is gemstone clarity. Clarity is the term that refers to the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Normally large flaws can be seen with the unaided eye with the others needing a 10X magnification.
Next item to look at is the duo of size and weight. Because gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If you have a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An emerald stone would be about 0.95 carats and an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.
