So You Want To Collect Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they are very beautiful items. And like their more familiar cousin, natural diamonds, they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to find, collect and finish the wide variety of gemstones available today. This article will discuss the hobby of loose gemstone collecting.

The first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the wise way is through the power of knowledge. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find a number of books to broaden your knowledge and that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

First on the list to evaluate is gemstone color. It is a fact that gemstones are the most intensely colored natural materials you can find. Gems have become so synonomous with color, they have even lent their names to specific colors. You've no doubt heard about emerald green, ruby red, sapphire blue, jade green, turquoise or aquamarine. Gemstones will have a higher value the closer they come to the natural spectral colors of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. They drop in value the farther they are from the spectral color.

The cut of the stone is extremely important and factors highly into the appraisal of not only diamonds but gemstones as well. A good cut highlights the gemstone's color, diminish any inclusions, and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One excellent method to determine the precision in the cut is to look at how consistent and well, it reflects the light over its entire surface. But if a gem is cut too shallow, most of the light will refract out instead of reflecting internally. The gem appears washed out.

Another factor to consider is the clarity of the stone. This refers to the stones purity or the lack of internal inclusions, particles or spots inside the crystal. Needless to say, stones with no flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Gemstones are often categorized according to their size criteria because it is more uniform than carat weight. But two different gemstones may be of the same size but have different carat weights that result in different pricing structures. This factor comes from the difference in specific gravity or relative density depending upon the materials chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with standard proportions will be approximately 6.5 mm in diameter. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and also rewarding in the long run. You don't need to spend a lot of money and yet you can build a very exquisite collection. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go looking for gemstones. For example in Idaho you'll find Garnet, Opal, Agate, Obsidian and Sapphire. Or you can take the time to travel and find opal in Opalton, Yowah, Queensland, Austalia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or hunt the quartz regions in Yellowdine Lake in Western Australia.

Some of the most important occurrences of sapphires can be found in Sri Lanka,
but sometimes access to them is difficult. Pit and river mining are the most
used techniques in Sri Lanka, but is impeded because the country resists
modernization. Other areas where sapphires can be found are Tanzania, Australia,
Madagascar, and Montana (USA).

The name tourmaline was derived from the Singhalese expression tura mali which translates as stone of mixed colors. Because tourmalines are a complex crystal often mixed with elements such as aluminum and boron, it occurs in more colors than most minerals, and can even have more than one color or hue. Green and red are the better known colors as well as multicolored stones. Depending on the angle of view, the color will be different or at least show a different intensity. In the 17th century it was found that tourmalines become electrically charged when under pressure or heated. This discovery attributed it with magical powers. Some believed the pink tourmaline attracted love, and the green brought success.
